Mr. Tunji Adeniyi
Educated at the Universities of Ibadan and Lagos, Nigeria, Tunji is an Honorary Senior Member of The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria. He also had Executive Management training at Harvard Business School; International Development Institute, Dublin, Ireland; and Georgetown University, Washington D. C., USA. He is a Member, Institute of Directors of Nigeria; and Member, Nigeria Institute of Management. He is a Fellow of the Certified Institute of Public Administrators, Ghana.
Tunji's love for Agriculture and Rural Enterprises as tools for fighting poverty was shaped by his functional Secondary School Education at African Church Comprehensive High School, Ikere – Ekiti between 1971 and 1976, and is the propelling force behind his current pursuit of a Doctoral Degree in Agricultural Economics at the University of Ibadan, specializing in Economic Development through Agriculture. Meanwhile, he holds BSc (Agricultural Economics); MBA (Finance & Accounting); and MSc. (Agricultural Economics).
A subject of biographical record in "Who's Who in the World" (Twelfth Edition of 1995) Adetunji Adeniyi was a pioneer Member of Commonwealth Business Council; and a Member of the Governing Council of the Financial Institutions Training Centre, Nigeria ( 2002/03/04 ). He was also a pioneer member of the Councils of Allover Central Polytechnic, Ota, Nigeria, The University of Education, Ikere Ekiti and The University of Science and Technology, Ifaki Ekiti (USTI) Nigeria, and served on the Council of the University of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti Nigeria between 2007 and 2010. Tunji was a Director and Chairman of the Audit Committee of Associated Discount House (ADH) Limited (2005 ); the 1st Vice President of the Nigeria Bankers Employers Group ( 2005 ); and Managing Director, Trade Bank Plc ( 2005). Before then, he was Executive Director at Omega Bank Plc from 2000 to 2004.
Mr Adeniyi has been involved in founding a Bank and in turning around two, in addition to working in international banks, having started his banking career in International Merchant Bank Limited (then an affiliate of the First National Bank of Chicago, USA) in 1986. He also served at Executive capacities at Equitorial Trust Bank Ltd and UBA PLC post banking consolidation in Nigeria.
A stickler for quality, morality, good corporate governance, professionalism, and ethics, he is a well-rounded Universal Banker, with experience in Commercial, Merchant and Investment Banking. He is an advocate of Banking integration in Africa, having long and predicted and presented strategic papers on same at professional and International fora.
For his professional accomplishments and contributions to the emancipation and development of Ekiti State and Nigeria, he was a recipient of E-Eleven Merit Award (2005) and Ekiti Parapo, Lagos Merit Award (2006).
He gathered public service experience as a two-term Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development of Ekiti State, Nigeria. During his tenor as Commissioner, he championed best practices in Public Financial Management, Fiscal Responsibility, Public Procurement, Transparency and Accountability, working in collaboration with the World Bank. During his tenor as Finance Commissioner, Ekiti State recorded a number of firsts in Public Financial Management to the admiration of the International Community by becoming:
  • The first State to ever audit and publish annual and half-yearly accounts of the Joint Account Allocation committee (JAAC);
  • The first State to execute Public Expenditure Review (PER) in collaboration with the World Bank post May 29, 2007;
  • The first State to prepare Domestic Debt Data Capture in collaboration with DMO (Debt Management Office);
  • The first State to audit, publish and sustain annual audit and publication of annual and half-yearly Statement of Accounts within 3 months of the end of the reporting periods; etc
  • Tunji led the preparation of the presentation that earned Ekiti State the first position and highest amount of MDG grant in 2007.
Tunji engages in formal and informal consultations with the World Bank Group, particularly on the New Engagement Strategy for Africa and the Growth and Employment Strategy for Nigeria. Under the Ministry of Finance, Tunji led Ekiti State back to the good books of the World Bank and the Donor Community, the State haven been blacklisted before May 29, 2007. Ministry of Finance under Tunji restructured Public expenditure in Ekiti in favour of Capital Expenditure of not less than 60% in line with World Best Practice.
Furthermore, Ekiti State draft Procurement Bill and Fiscal Responsibility Bill were adjudged the best and used by the Donor Community (World Bank, UNDP etc) to facilitate training of other States in Fiscal Responsibility and Public Procurement Legislation in 2008. Also, on the basis of contributions to National discuss on Public Debt Management, he was selected by the Federal Government (National Assembly, Federal Ministry of Finance, DMO, and the Presidency) to represent the Southwest in the Study Tour of Brazil on Debt Management in July, 2010.
Adetunji is happily married with children.
